Cosmetic Dentistry
Some patients attend dental clinics for the management of disease, while others seek to improve the appearance of their teeth and smile. Any aesthetic dental treatment must be considered in the context of overall oral health.
Prior to commencing any cosmetic or elective dental procedure, a comprehensive clinical assessment by a registered dentist is required. Treatment recommendations are based on individual clinical findings, oral health status, and patient-specific needs and expectations.
Where appropriate, diagnostic tools such as clinical examination, photography, and digital imaging (including 3D scanning) may be used to assist in assessment and treatment planning.
Depending on clinical suitability, treatment options may include:
- Tooth whitening
- Tooth recontouring (enameloplasty)
- Orthodontic treatment, including clear aligners
- Porcelain veneers and crowns
- Gum recontouring procedures
- Dental implants
- Tooth-coloured (composite) restorations
All treatment options will only be recommended where clinically appropriate and following a thorough assessment.
A typical treatment pathway may include:
- Comprehensive clinical examination and discussion of concerns, goals, and expectations
- Clinical photographs and diagnostic records to assess aesthetics, function, speech, and occlusion
- Digital scanning and treatment planning, which may include digital smile design where appropriate
- Where indicated, provisional or reversible trial restorations to assist in visualising proposed outcomes prior to definitive treatment
- Management of existing oral health concerns (such as decay or gum disease) prior to elective procedures
- Provision of definitive treatment, with review appointments to monitor function and oral health outcomes
- Provision of protective appliances (such as occlusal splints/night guards) where clinically indicated
- Ongoing maintenance and review to monitor the health of teeth and supporting structures following treatment
All dental procedures carry risks. These may include, but are not limited to, sensitivity, inflammation, wear, fracture, need for replacement or further treatment, and variability in aesthetic outcomes. Benefits, limitations, risks, and alternative treatment options will be discussed with you prior to commencing treatment to support informed decision-making.
If you are considering cosmetic dental treatment, you may arrange a consultation for a clinical assessment and discussion of suitable treatment options based on your individual circumstances.
